Golf is a game that supposedly prides itself on integrity. Golfers keep their own score and have to sign their scorecard at the end of a round because … tradition. Golfers hate cheaters as much as they hate being called a cheater.
That played out in a huge way over the weekend.
One golfer, who competed in the club championship at Lake Club Benoni in South Africa, was in the clubhouse as a competitor shouted accusations of cheating. The winning golfer — named Mike — took exception to the accusations and responded by, uh, head-butting the guy through a window and punching him in the face repeatedly. (Warning: NSFW language)
This all started with the guy at the bar yelling towards Mike, “You’re a thief, man. You’re a cheat!”
That golf fight was no joke. Mike meant business. Unfortunately for him, he probably won’t be making anymore appearances at Lake Club Benoni.
The club posted a statement to Facebook on Monday:
Dear members
On behalf of Lake Club we duly apologise for the unfortunate situation that happened during our Club championship prize giving yesterday. Please note that we do not accept nor condone any such behaviour as we have obligation to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all our members and guests. It is very unfortunate that the video has gone Viral as this is a once off incident and is not indicative of the fellowship we have at our club.
Urgent meetings to discuss the way forward have already taken place and we can assure you that the situation will be dealt with both fairly and promptly. We request your patience in the meanwhile. We will ensure that a communication will follow once the relevant Sanctions have been imposed.
