A brief history of J.B. Holmes being called out for slow play

J.B. Holmes has five PGA Tour wins to his name along with a T4 at the 2016 Masters and a third-place finish at the British Open that same year.

But he’s most associated with his ridiculously slow play that’s gotten him called out by golfers, fans and analysts over the years. Even though he’s not the only one playing at a snail-like pace, he’s become a poster-boy of sorts for it.

The latest incident involved Brooks Koepka, who was thoroughly annoyed about playing with Holmes on Sunday at the Open Championship and talked about it after the round.

It’s something Koepka has discussed before. When we spoke in 2018 about slow play in general, he told For The Win “They need to actually penalize someone … It’ll never be a big deal until someone gets penalized and loses a tournament by one and it’s a big thing.”

Here’s a look back at some of the other slow play moments Holmes has been involved in:

1.  2019 British Open

2.  2019 Genesis Open

He actually won this event, but look at how long he took to putt here and how CBS analyst Peter Kostis called him out for it:

3. 2018 Farmers Insurance Open

He took over four minutes before taking a shot at Torrey Pines. Fellow pros were mad, particularly on behalf of his playing partner Alex Noren.

4. 2008

From a Golf.com story about slow play:

“A lot of old habits kick in when you’re under pressure,” Holmes said. “You’re playing for $1 million. If somebody thinks I’m slow, or taking long, I don’t care. Personally, I don’t want to take that long. I’m working on that. I would rather be slow and win than rush something, hit a bad shot and not win.”
