A brand new gym could be built at the site of a fire-ravaged Victorian school house

A new gym could be built where a former Victorian school house once stood before it was ravaged by fire.

W Collard has lodged proposals for the facility for at the rear of School Cottages, Sandy Lane, North Gosforth, with North Tyneside Council.

This part of North Gosforth falls within the borough’s Weetslade ward.

Planning documents lodged with the authority describes the site as “unique” because it is in the corner of a conservation area predominantly covered in woodland.

The statement said that the gym would boast a “strong and contemporary design”.

It said: “The design of scheme is of a deliberately strong and contemporary design. It is recognised and accepted that within a conservation area and on a prominent site like this, any building design has to have a strong and robust architectural integrity which positively contributes to the site and the wider location. The development now proposed is considered to achieve this aim.”

The statement said that the proposed gym would have good links to public transport, being close to bus services and the Regent Centre Metro station.

The 19th century school house, that was on the corner of Sandy Lane and the B1318, near Wideopen, was considered a local landmark and valued for its architecture and historical connections to the Gosforth Park Estate.

However the building was badly damaged after an arson attack in 2007 and was later demolished.

North Tyneside Council is expected to decide on the application by October.
