A brand new bar could be coming to Whitley Bay and it plans to help up and coming artists

Plans for a brand new bar in Whitley Bay have been lodged with the council.

The owners of the bar, called Baba Yaga’s House, have applied to North Tyneside Council for permission to serve alcohol from a venue on Whitley Road.

If the proposals are given the go-ahead the bar would be allowed to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises 11am to 11pm every day.

The venue’s proprietors also want to play recorded music over the same hours.

An application form to the authority described the venue as a “safe social space”.

It said: “Our vision is to provide a safe social space, with focus on a relaxed cafe/coffee house come wine/eatery atmosphere where the community is priority.

“As a local Whitley Bay family we love the place we live and want to add to the current on-going improvements in a positive way.”

The application document also described how the venue would be used to help up and coming artists.

It added: “Currently we have been in discussion with two young local artists and another independent start up business. We think a premises like ours would benefit them and the community greatly as we would allow free, non-profit, promotion of their work (and any others interested) in our venue, besides this we greatly value local produce and aim to source as much as we can from Whitley Bay.”

In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga is a supernatural being who appears as a deformed or ferocious-looking old woman, who lived in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs.

North Tyneside Council’s licensing department has yet to decide on the proposals.
