A boy is fighting for his life in hospital after being knocked off his bike in Rochdale

A boy is fighting for his life in hospital after being knocked off his bike in Rochdale last night.

The accident took place on Milnrow Road, in Newbold at about 9pm.

Police say the boy, 15 , was hit by a Volkswagen Golf close to the junction with Kathan Close.

He was taken to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital suffering from serious head injuries.

Today his condition is described as 'critical'.

Police cordoned off the road for about five hours after the incident.

The driver stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made.

One nearby business owner said: "About 9.55pm all the road was closed off.

"It was quite a chaotic scene, there were five or six police cars.

"There was a white van turned in on its side.

"There was a lot of people, a lot of kids, it seemed pretty serious. It's sad."

A woman who lives nearby said paramedics were treating the schoolboy as she was returning home from work.

"The ambulance went off with all the sirens on," she said.
