A bountiful harvest of 'mushroom ice'

KAMISHIHORO, Hokkaido -- A wooden stump with ice made from the surface water of Lake Nukabira in Kamishihoro, Hokkaido, a phenomenon called "mushroom ice," is a delightful view for the lake's visitors.

Lake Nukabira is a reservoir that was completed in 1956 from a dam built for hydroelectric power. A lot of wooden stumps from the trees cut down during construction remain at the bottom of the lake. In the middle of winter, when there is little precipitation, the water level of the lake drops, and the stumps with ice appear everywhere similar to mushrooms. "This year, there hasn't been much snow and the water level of the dam lake is falling, so there is plenty of mushroom ice. You can see it until around the end of this month," says local photographer Ryoji Iwasaki.
