A body has been found near Tesco in Stockport town centre

A body has been found on grassland in Stockport.

Police were called to the scene off Tiviot Way - close to Tesco Extra at Portwood and Reddish Vale Country Park - just before 1pm on Saturday.

The body is understood to be that of a man.

GMP are yet to confirm his age.

A spokesman for the force said the death was being treated as not suspicious.

They added that the man's family has been made aware, and a file would be prepared for the coroner.

Witnesses report seeing a large number of police vehicles at the scene throughout Saturday afternoon.

GMP said: "We were called at 12.58pm to reports that someone had passed away at the scene.

"Officers attended and found a man deceased.

"We are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death but it is being treated as non-suspicious at this time.

"The man's family is aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

"A file will be passed to the coroner."
