'A bit like Steve Bruce' - Rafa Benitez's situation at Everton compared to Newcastle boss opposition

Rafa Benitez's appointment at Everton has been compared to Steve Bruce's situation at Newcastle United.

Benitez was appointed as Toffees boss on a three-year deal in June although he has faced opposition from certain sections of the Goodison Park faithful.

The Spaniard, of course, managed Everton's city rivals Liverpool for five seasons winning the Champions League and FA Cup during his time at Anfield.

Merseyside Police investigated an anti-Benitez banner hung close to his home on the Wirral prior to his appointment and the 61-year-old will have work to do to win round the section of supporters who fervently oppose his arrival on the Blue side of the City.

Benitez, who remains popular with Newcastle fans after his three-and-a-half year stint in charge of the club, was replaced on Tyneside by Steve Bruce as Magpies boss back in 2019.

The former Manchester United skipper has failed to win over fans who labelled his appointment as 'underwhelming' and performances and results since then have left a large section of Newcastle fans with major doubts over his credentials.

Bruce infamously managed Sunderland prior to his Newcastle appointment and although the reservations of the Toon Army are nothing to do with the 60-year-old managing their rivals, former Blues star Norman Whiteside still sees some parallels.

"Rafa Benitez was a hugely-controversial appointment but I don’t know the guy at all," Whiteside told the Liverpool Echo.

“He’s got great credentials, but there will be a few who might not take to him, a bit like Steve Bruce at Newcastle, but he’s got a job to do and football talks so if he does well then that will all go on the back-burner.”
