A bingo hall is going to bus in homeless people from Swansea to give them a slap-up Christmas meal

A bingo hall is planning to bus homeless people from Swansea to the venue to feed them a slap-up Christmas meal.

Mecca Bingo on Carmarthen Road is making the Christmas gesture for rough sleepers on Sunday, December 15, when those taking them up on the offer will get to sit down for a hot, festive meal with all the trimmings.

And to make sure they can make it, they have laid on a bus which will collect them from Whitewalls in the city centre, and then bring them back afterwards.

Kim Jones, manager at Mecca Swansea, said: “This Christmas season is the worst time of the year for the homeless to be sleeping on the streets.

"The weather is dangerously cold and it's important for them to find shelter and food.

"Not only that but Christmas is a time of giving which is why our employees have donated their time for this fantastic cause.

"We're looking forward to chatting with any guests that visit the club this Sunday."

The meal will be provided by Mecca Bingo employees giving up their time for free, who have teamed up with Swansea charity Where's Doris, which will provide transport to the club to anyone in need of food and shelter.

Regular visitors to the venue have been donating hats, gloves, scarves and duvets for the past week, which will be shared amongst visitors.

In addition to the soup kitchen, Mecca Bingo Swansea is running a care for the community drive every Tuesday afternoon from January 7.

The ‘ladies that lunch’ event will involve local housing shelters for the elderly, which will include bingo, lunch and bottomless tea and coffee.

The gesture by the bingo company, which has venues across the UK, is the latest offer of free food for those down on the luck over the holiday period.

In Swansea , Dennys in Parc Tawe, the Salvation Army in Sandfields , St Stephen’s Church in Port Tennant , and the Flying Pig pub in Ystalyfera are amongst those making Christmas meals available for free.

And there are others across Wales who are also making the selfless service .
