"A bare-faced lie!" - GMB's Piers Morgan hits out at Alok Sharma over coronavirus test figures

Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has slammed Business Secretary Alok Sharma for telling 'bare-faced lies' during an interview with BBC Breakfast.

The 55-year-old host was left furious after Sharma was heard saying that 240,000 people had been tested on Monday for Covid-19.

Piers hit out at the comment, saying it was an 'absolute lie'.

Piers Morgan was left furious after the Business Secretary claimed that 240,000 people had been tested on Monday, June 22 (ITV)

He said: "They claim to have done 240,000 tests. We know that they're testing some people three or four times.

"We know that they're counting the two swabs as two tests.

"We know that they're mailing out thousands of tests a day, many of which are not being done.

"And we know that for one calendar month now, since we pointed out this absurd discrepancy between people tested and number of tests, they stopped telling us."

He added: "Alok Sharma has literally just gone on the BBC, and unchallenged has just claimed that 240,000 people have been tested on Monday.

"That is a bare-faced lie, which I would say to his face if we weren't still subject to the 57th day Government boycott."

Susanna then suggested that Sharma may have 'proof' that 240,000 people got tested, but Piers argued: "That is the bogus figure of tests that they claim have been done, it has nothing to do with the number of people being tested.

"The fact that a Government minister doesn't know that, or knows it and is lying, it's one or the other, he's either stupid or a liar."

The number of people being tested has been 'temporarily paused to ensure consistent reporting' across all methods of testing.

The Government has explained that this is due to 'a small percentage of cases where the same person has had more than one test or tested positive more than once for coronavirus'.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV at 6am.
