A 96-year-old World War II veteran nailed the national anthem before US-Mexico match

The U.S. women’s soccer team played Mexico on Sunday in its final tuneup before heading over to France for the Women’s World Cup, which starts next month.

And while the USWNT defeated Mexico 3-0 in the friendly, what happened before the opening whistle might have stolen show.

96-year-old WWII veteran Pete DuPré brought down the house at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., when he performed the national anthem on his harmonica.

The USMNT provided NJ.com with info on the wonderful man who has the nickname “Harmonica Pete,” as he’s been performing for years:

During WWII, DuPre served as a medic in the 114th General Hospital Unit in Kidderminster, England. At age 17, both of his parents had already died, making him the acting patriarch of a five-person family. Within a year, Pete had enlisted in the Army serving three years overseas during which time he treated wounded servicemen from all areas of Europe.

Check out his performance:

How great was that?!

Well done, “Harmonica Pete.”
