The father of a three-year-old boy who was found dead in a south Sydney apartment earlier this week has been charged with murder.
ABC News reported that the father is currently under police guard in hospital after he allegedly fatally stabbed a three-year-old child.
On Wednesday, paramedics and police were called to an apartment block in Riverwood at about 4pm.
ABC News reported that the child was found inside with stab wounds.
Police said a 45-year-old man, who they believe lived with the child, was found with serious injuries and was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital. He had undergone surgery and is in a stable condition.
Superintendent Sheridan Waldau told reporters on Wednesday evening that a woman who “normally” lives alone in the unit, and is related to the man, called triple zero.
“Unfortunately, the child’s mother passed away a couple of years ago,” she said.
“This is obviously a horrific incident.
“A crime scene was established and investigations have commenced.
“The homicide squad is now on the scene and assisting us with those inquiries.”
Superintendent Waldau said the man’s partner, who was not at the scene of the incident, is speaking with police.
Nearby resident David Chen told the Daily Telegraph the news was “incredibly concerning”.
“I have my own child so to hear something like this, it’s very unfortunate,” he said.
“I’ve been here six years and this is the first time we’ve had any events like this, so we are all shocked.
“It’s a close-knit community.”
ABC News reported that the father was refused bail and was due to appear today at Parramatta Bail Court, but that has since been re-scheduled to Wednesday, August 9, at Burwood Local Court.
