A 13-year-old boy has been stabbed in Heaton Mersey - and a 14-year-old boy has been arrested

A boy of 13 is in hospital after he was stabbed near a convenience store in Heaton Mersey - and a boy of 14 has been arrested.

The victim suffered 'potentially serious' injuries during an assault close to the Co-op on Didsbury Road on Sunday evening.

Officers were initially called to Hamilton Crescent following reports that a teenage boy had been stabbed.

Detectives believe the assault took place near the Co-op on Didsbury Road.

As police stepped up patrols in the area, a statement from Greater Manchester Police revealed a boy of 14 has been arrested on suspicion of a serious (section 18) assault.

He remained in police custody on Sunday night and was being interviewed by detectives.

Detective Inspector Simon Akker said: "We are currently responding to an incident in Heaton Mersey which has seen a teenage boy stabbed earlier this evening.

"I understand this will cause some concern given the ages of those involved but I hope the fact that we have made an arrest - along with an increased police presence in the area - will provide the local community with some reassurance.

"This increased police presence is likely to continue for some time as officers carry out enquiries and I would urge anybody who has concerns to please approach one of these officers.

"Our investigation will continue into the coming days and I would urge anybody who has information that they believe can assist to please contact us."

The victim had been taken to hospital and his injuries were 'potentially serious', a spokesman for GMP confirmed earlier.

One resident told the M.E.N: "There are always kids hanging around outside. That store has a big problem with shoplifters and there are always cops there."
