A £12m project to fix Bolton's worst potholes pressing on despite coronavirus lockdown

Some of the most badly damaged roads in Horwich and Blackrod will still be repaired next week, despite the lockdown.

Last year, Bolton Council announced a list of hundreds of roads across the borough which had been earmarked for repair work as part of a £12 million project.

Repair work will begin on Marsh Street, Ramsbottom Road, Summer Street, Iron Street and Rawlinson Street, in Horwich next week. St Katherines Drive, in Blackrod, will also be fixed.

The repairs are continuing in line with government guidance on the importance of construction for the nation. Bolton Council confirmed work will be carried out in accordance with official guidelines on safe distancing and several measures are in place to protect both staff and the public from any risk.

Deputy leader of Bolton Council, Coun Martyn Cox, said: “Dozens of streets have already been restored as part of this programme and I am very pleased that work is continuing despite the difficult circumstances.

“We know that the disrepair of some of our residential streets was a real concern across the borough and that is why we have invested in these improvements.

“Our top priority as a council is to protect the health of our staff and the public and there will be strict measures in place while work is carried out.

“I want to thank the roadwork teams for going the extra mile to deliver this vital service.”

Funding for the scheme was announced in July last year with all 20 wards allocated £600,000 to fix up some of the most badly damaged roads in each area.

The funding is on top of the standard highways maintenance budget.

Further work is due to begin in Westhoughton in mid-May and a schedule of upcoming projects is available on the council website.
