999 Fire Service call handler talks trapped casualty out of submerged vehicle

A hero 999 call handler for the Fire Service talked a woman trapped in her submerged car to safety.

The incident took place on the Speerholme Road, Castlederg, around 9.27pm on Sunday night.

Firefighters scrambled and while they made their way to the scene an operator in the Regional Control Centre helped the motorist find a way out of the vehicle as flood waters gushed.

A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters from Castlederg Fire Station were called to a water rescue incident where an individual was trapped inside their car in flood waters.

“The casualty was expertly instructed how to get out of the submerged vehicle by a member of our Regional Control Centre.

“When Firefighters arrived the casualty had got themselves to safety and was taken into the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and their vehicle was handed into the care of the PSNI.

“The incident was dealt with by 9.57pm.”
