99 flake shortage due to Brexit could ruin Irish summer

In news that absolutely no one wanted to hear, a potential flake shortage is on the horizon over the coming months.

With Britain having left the EU earlier this year, the import of delicious flakes has been getting harder and harder for businesses around the country.

99s with flakes are a cornerstone of the traditional Irish summer experience but there are genuine concerns that a lack of production, as well as tougher import regulations, will hit hard in the months ahead.

Over the last couple of weeks, demand has grown thanks to the summer weather and now ice cream shops are struggling to cope with the demand.

In a statement to the Irish Times, Mondelez, owner of Cadbury, has confirmed issues with supply but that they are working hard to remedy the situation.

"We are seeing a recent increase in demand for our Cadbury 99 Flake in Ireland, ” said a company spokesperson.

“The product is still available to order and we’re continuing to work closely with our customers."

According to one shop owner in Tramore, Co Waterford, he got a tip-off that Cadbury in the UK had no remaining flakes.

Currently, online you can buy a box of 144 flakes for between €20 and€30.
