'97 points to go' - Sunderland fans react as Lee Johnson's side edge opening-day win over Wigan

Sunderland fans have expressed their delight as the Black Cats picked up an opening-day victory over potential promotion rivals Wigan Athletic.

Lee Johnson's side came from behind to claim a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon and make a perfect start to the 2021/22 campaign.

Summer signings Callum Doyle and Corry Evans made their competitive debuts in red-and-white, while ex-Sunderland men Max Power and Charlie Wyke both started for Wigan following their recent moves.

Gwion Edwards put the Latics into an early lead, although this advantage was cancelled out just two minutes later with Aiden McGeady's penalty.

Ross Stewart's close-range header in the 53rd minute settled the contest, although Lynden Gooch came close to adding a third when his shot struck the underside of the bar.

Concerns have been raised over the relative lack of transfer activity on Wearside, with the Black Cats recruiting Doyle, Evans and Alex Pritchard having allowed 10 players to depart.

However, Johnson's side have successfully negotiated a tricky opening-day encounter ahead of their midweek EFL Cup clash at Port Vale.

Here is how Sunderland fans reacted to the opening-day win over Wigan.

'Loch Ness Drogba'

'Great start'

'Great to be back'

'97 points to go'

'Emptying his pockets'

'Outstanding lads'
