ORLANDO, Fla. _ Orange County Sheriff's detectives are "determined" to arrest a suspect in what they called a "horrific attack" that left a 92-year-old woman with a broken back, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
"The victim is well-known and well-liked in her neighborhood and has a strong support system of family," spokeswoman Jane Watrel said of the 40-year Orange County resident.
Deputies said the woman was doing laundry in her garage around 9 a.m on Jan. 17 in the area of North Hiawassee Road north of Colonial Drive in Pine Hills when she heard a door bell ring.
When she went to the door, the suspect asked to use her bathroom, but she refused. He then pointed a gun at her and attacked her, said Watrel. The two struggled, and he pushed her to the ground, breaking her back.
Watrel said she was taken to a hospital where she "underwent hours of surgery." The woman remains in the hospital in stable condition and was only able to meet with a sketch artist Monday.
