91-year-old great grandmother beats coronavirus after her family told her to 'fight for us'

A 91-year-old great grandmother has returned home after winning her fight against coronavirus.

Eluned Lloyd, who lives in a nursing home in Gorseinon, was so unwell at one point that they thought they were going to lose her.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, those over 85 have been some of the most vulnerable to become ill and die from the virus.

So when staff at the grandmother-of-six's care home phoned her family to say that she was unwell, Mrs Lloyd's family prepared for the worst.

"We were told she had a really high temperature and her oxygen levels were low and then they called an ambulance to take her to Singleton Hospital," said Eluned's eldest daughter Ann Lloyd-Biston.

In Singleton Hospital, Eluned who is a retired teacher, was swabbed and tested positive for Coronavirus before she was taken to the Covid ward.

"We visited her that weekend, which we were very lucky to do because it's at the discretion of the consultant. But I remember seeing her and thinking she looked awful," added Ann.

"I remember looking at her then and I said to my sisters that we probably wouldn't see her again."

Ann, 60, and her two sisters Rona, 58 and Catrin, 54 visited their mum at the hospital cloaked in PPE, days after she was admitted on May 8.

"We were really grateful to be able to visit her and just wanted to hug her but were dressed with PPE and obviously couldn't go near her - it just didn't feel natural," added Ann, who lives in Pontardddulais.

"As we were leaving the hospital I told her 'you need to fight for us,' and I think that stuck with her."

Thankfully after around two weeks in hospital, Ms Lloyd's started to improve and she was again tested for the virus - the result this time came out negavtive - before being allowed to go home.

Ann said: "It was just the best news ever, this weight lifted and we were delighted - she is such a strong women."

Eluned left Singleton Hospital and returned to her nursing home Llys-y-Tywysog just over two weeks after going to hospital but the family have still not been able to visit her.

"I turned 60 at the beginning of May and that was difficult not having my mam there, we really miss her and I just want to give her a hug but obviously haven't been able to see her since she got better - it goes against everything you feel."

"She is the head of the family and has always supported us. She is a great grandmother-of-two aswell and I think that and thinking about the whole family really kept her going."

Ann, a nurse who works in the GP practice, said the care and support her mum received from hospital staff at Singleton and staff at her care home left her in awe.

She said: "Excellent - is the only word I can use to explain it, when we wanted to video call they would make it happen, they kept us in the loop, they were amazing."

"We're all just so grateful to them and that she's still with us."
