Crew members of the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was anchored at Yokohama Port due to an onboard outbreak of the new coronavirus, began to disembark from the ship on Thursday after negative test results were confirmed for them. About 240 people were set to disembark over the coming days, of whom 91 actually left the ship on Thursday.
The remaining 150 crew members will disembark over several coming days.
They are going to stay at the National Tax College's Wako Campus in Wako, Saitama Prefecture, for two weeks.
According to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, most of the crew were foreigners. The crew members will stay at the facility after disembarking from the ship because they had been in contact with passengers suspected of being infected with the virus. If the test results are negative when they leave the facility, the crew members can then return home.
At the Daikoku Pier in Yokohama Port, where the cruise ship is anchored, a bus thought to be carrying the crew members left the pier at about 2:50 p.m on Thursday. The bus driver was wearing protective clothing, and people wearing masks occasionally opened curtains to look outside.
