900 Arrested in Jerusalem, One-Third of Them Are Children

Army claimed man was resisting arrest, but said an investigation will be opened ( Reuters )

Palestinian Prisoners Center for Studies affirmed that there has been a clear escalation in arrests by the occupation against the Palestinians in the occupied Jerusalem since the beginning of 2019 with a total of 900 cases of arrest.

The Israeli authorities insisted on destroying 100 houses in the sacred city, namely in Silwan and Sur Baher.

The report also showed that the arrests focused mainly on minors, with around 300 cases of arrests. This represents one-third of the total arrests in Jerusalem since the beginning of the year including more than 17 children under the age of 12.

The occupation also issued house arrest decisions against children, which means that they are obliged to stay home for a specific time and are banned from leaving even for studying or receiving a treatment. The majority of children who appeared before the courts were imposed to exclusion from houses and expensive fines.

Further, the report noted that the occupation continued to target women making the total of arrests 43 including minors. Most of them were released in return for house arrest or exclusion from Aqsa for different periods.

Media spokesman for Palestinian Prisoners Center for Studies Riyad al-Ashqar revealed that the arrests in Jerusalem represent one third of arrests in the whole occupied territories during the first six months of the year.

They reached a total of 2,600 and this indicates a clear targeting of the people of Jerusalem for the sake of preventing them from protecting the sacred sites and defending Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Head of popular committee of Wadi Homs Hamada Hamadeh said that the residents are performing Friday prayer in Silwan and Sur Baher for the fifth week in a row to denounce the destruction decisions and operations that include commercial and residential establishments in Jerusalem.
