Around 900 people have been arrested in connection to riots that broke out after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the Champions League title over the weekend.
Clashes between the youth and the police, of Paris and other cities, disrupted victory celebrations. Shops were looted, vandalized, and cars were set on fire, as reported by the AFP.
French interior minister Laurent Nunez told public broadcaster France Inter, “We’ve had more than 890 arrests. In total, that's 45 percent more than last year,” and added that about 180 law enforcement officers were wounded in the riots.
The PSG team was received by French President Emmanuel Macron at his residence, the Elysee Palace. He denounced the “unspeakable violence” expressing that PSG are a source of immense pride for France.
“Enough. We are fed up,” he said, referring to the violence. “This is not football, this is not sport, this is not what we love.”
The riots left one person dead and over 200 injured. In the celebration around the Paris ring road, one man died riding his motorbike. Authorities reported stabbings and other attacks.
This was Paris Saint Germain’s second consecutive Champions League title, and the second one won by them in the club’s history. The violence mirrors their last CL victory celebrations in May last year, which injured 201 and led to over 500 arrests.
