Honorary doctorates for V. Ravichandran (cinema), M.R. Jaishankar (social service) and Sathyanarayana (medicine)
Ninety toppers will be awarded with gold medals and cash prizes at the first convocation of Bengaluru City University that will be held on Monday. Honorary doctorates will also be conferred on V. Ravichandran (cinema), M.R. Jaishankar (social service) and Sathyanarayana (medicine).
Addressing reporters here on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor Lingaraja Gandhi said that Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who is the varsity Chancellor, would preside over the convocation, while K. Kasturirangan, chairman of the drafting committee, National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework, would deliver the convocation address. Minister for Higher Education C.N. Ashwath Narayan, who is also the Pro-Chancellor, will attend.
A total of 41,768 students of different faculties are eligible to receive their degrees in the first convocation. Of these students, 64.51% are women and 35.49% are men. Of the 29,240 undergraduate students, 2,723 belong to the Arts faculty, 7,179 are from science, 16,881 from commerce and management, and 2,457 from education.
Two batches of postgraduate students – 2018-20 and 2019-21 – will be graduating. Of the 12,528 PG students, 1,369 are from Arts, 2,932 from science, 8,191 from commerce and management, and 36 from education faculties.
Gold medalists
In all, 84 PG students – 32 from each batch – and six UG students will be awarded with gold medals and cash prizes. Of these, seven students will receive gold medals and cash prize instituted by different donors.
Prof. Gandhi said that seven donors had each contributed ₹6 lakh, which has since been deposited. The university will be getting ₹30,000 as interest from each of the endowments, of which ₹20,000 will be given away as cash prize and ₹10,000 will be used for the gold medals. The varsity medals will originally be made of silver, which will be dipped in gold, he said.
He also said the varsity syndicate had already decided on the dress code. All students attending the convocation would have to mandatorily wear white, he added.
