Canadian newspaper the Halifax Daily News was closed yesterday by its Montreal-based owner Transcontinental Media. It is to be replaced by a jointly-owned free daily, Metro, due out on Thursday. More than 90 staff at the Nova Scotia daily have been made redundant. It sold about 20,000 copies compared to the 110,000 sold by its rival, the Halifax Chronicle Herald.
