9 things you hated as a child that you probably love as an adult

There are some things that were universally pure torture when you were a wee one.

Bedtime was bad, Coco Pops were class, and our siblings definitely just existed to batter us.

However, as time went on our perspectives changed and suddenly the things that seemed inconceivable in our youth became attractive.

So, here are nine things you hated as a child that you probably love as an adult.

The opposite sex

At some point the source of annoyance via prissiness/revolting behaviour and "ewwwww boys" quickly turned into "wow, what a ride" and suddenly you were dying for the shift.

Hairdressers

Remember when having someone brandish scissors at your head was your worst nightmare? Now split-ends and grey hairs are.

Socks

Unwrapping a Christmas present to discover it was socks was such a let down. They just weren’t as exciting as toys or PlayStation games as a child!

But if it happened now, we’d be so grateful for the opportunity to replace those holy socks and add a few matching pairs to our collection (especially fluffy socks, we love those).

Vegetables

“You can’t leave the table until you eat all your veg”. This was horrible and some of us even threatened to ring ChildLine but it turns out broccoli is actually delicious.

Home stores and office supplies

These were no craic when we were younger, but now a trip to a home store or to buy office supplies is a big treat. There's nothing more exciting than opening a fresh package of pencils especially when mammy and daddy pays for them.

People thinking you’re younger than you are

The older you get, the more of a compliment it is to have someone mistake you for a younger age. Getting ID’d at 30 years old is a dream of ours. We're not ready to crack open the anti-wrinkle cream yet!

Cancelled plans

We hated when someone couldn’t go ahead with plans as a child, whether it was a playdate cancelled or a trip to the park because it was raining. We can only dream of plans being cancelled now, more me-time for us.

The pub

We hated being put in the corner with a packet of cheese and onion crisps and a glass bottle of Club Orange. We spent hours begging to go home. Now we’re begging the bar man for a lock-in.

Baths

When mammy turned the immersion on and had the dressing gown (not a housecoat) ready to go on a Sunday evening before school was our worst nightmare.

But now we’d give anything to sit in the bath with a few candles and our favourite music blaring.

Bedtime

As a kid you weren’t even tired, sometimes you were made to go to bed in the summer and it wasn’t dark yet, extremely unfair. But as time goes on we’re only dying for our beds, especially naps, no matter what the time is.

Even being sent to bed early for being bold was a dread, but now we’re begging for it to happen again.

Documentaries

Information? No thanks. Jk please tell me more about global warming and murderers.

Shows that used to be boring when you were young suddenly become fun when you’re an adult, Reeling in the Years is the perfect example, even a bit of Dermot Bannon is top quality entertainment.

Shopping

Being dragged around a shopping centre as a kid was not ideal. It consisted of boredom, pains in your feet, the possibility of losing your parents and having to go to customer service for them to announce on the intercom that you’re lost.

But as an adult shopping is great, popping into Penneys for a few bits is magical, especially when they’ve clothes on sale. And you're only praying that you'll get lost so you don't have to go to work the next day.
