9 romantic Welsh castles where you can spend the night

If you're looking to treat your other half to a night away then what's more romantic than checking into a castle...

Everyone knows that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring castles in Wales but did you realise you can spend a night in some of them too?

Here are nine historic venues where you can cwtch up together - it's just choosing which one that will be the hardest part.

1. Hen Wrych Hall Tower near Abergele

What: It's your own sweet castle tower in a beautiful corner of north Wales.

Romance factor: Are you kidding; this tower has a heavily carved king-size four poster bed, roll top bath and an open working fireplace.

Plus less than 5 minutes’ walk from the North Wales coastline and beach, for romantic strolls and to watch the sunset.

2. Clytha Castle near Abergavenny

What: The Landmark Trust have restored this fairy tale castle tower for all to enjoy .

Romance factor: A castle built out of love - it doesn't get more romantic than that!

In January 1787, William Jones moved back to Wales from London and built this castle in remembrance of his love for his departed wife, but also a distraction to help get over his loss.

3. Roch Castle, Pembrokeshire

What: A 12th century Norman castle standing proud, looking over the west Wales landscape.

Romance factor: the ideal fairy tale castle from the outside that was a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War, the inside has been modernised to a luxurious standard to ensure that you and your partner will feel like members of a royal family.

4. Bath Tower, Caernarfon

What: This is one of the towers of the medieval town wall, facing the waters of the Menai Strait.

Restored by the Landmark Trust, Bath Tower's accommodation has been restored on top of the original dungeon, but don't let that put you off.

Romance factor: Feels like a staying in a proper castle, with lime washed walls, battlement views from the top bedroom and there's even a terrace for sipping something bubbly, gazing out over the Menai Strait and maybe even room to go down on one knee and pop the question?

5. Chateau Rhianfa, Anglesey

What: A 22 room Gothic style Chateau nestled away in Anglesey and with majestic views to Snowdonia in the distance.

6. Castell Deudraeth, Portmeirion

What: It is an early Victorian castellated mansion and part of the unique Italian style village designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, which was completely refurbished in 2001.

Romance factor: Book the penthouse suite for the atmosphere and low level lighting to create the romantic vibe. It has a sitting room, kitchen and outside patio too. You never need to leave the room for the whole stay.

7. Hywel Sele Lodge near Dolgellau

What: Described as a semi-ruinous Tudor-Gothic style lodge or is it a cute mini castle - who cares, it's totally gorgeous.

It has history too - Hywel Sele famously attempted to assassinate his rebellious cousin Owain Glyndwr during a hunting expedition here. Hopefully there won't be any disagreements that serious if you stay with your other half.

Romance factor: Nestled in rolling countryside, surrounded by fields, woodland and water, there's nothing to do here but relax and admire the view, which could be the landscape or could be your other half.

8. The Welsh Gatehouse near Chepstow

What: A luxury award winning period property, built in the time of Edward I, this Grade II* medieval hideaway boasts seven hundred years of history - and with its twin towers it feels like you are King of the castle.

Romance factor: Refurbished in 2008, the owners have updated the property but have not lost the historic feel of the building and have included a secret floating bed that hovers above the main living area on a mezzanine floor, perfect for long lie-ins and breakfast in bed.

9. Brynkir Tower, Lleyn

What: OK, arguably not a castle, it's a Gothic tower folly but worth considering as it's pretty impressive.

Romance factor: Gallop up to the tower, where the princess is waiting, desperate for her knight in shining armour to rescue her, or at least open the bubbly and run her a bubble bath.
