A car crash has left nine people dead and eight others wounded on a desert road connecting the capital Cairo and the city of Ismailia, Egypt's Health Ministry said Saturday.

The accident took place when a taxi crashed into a microbus, leading the cab to burst into flames, Ministry Spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

He added the injuries include first-degree burns and suspected concussions.

According to Megahed, fourteen ambulances transported the bodies of victims and the injured to hospitals.

Road accidents are common in Egypt. The World Health Organization says such accidents kill around 12,000 people in Egypt annually.

On Wednesday, at least 15 people were killed and 40 others were injured in a train crash in the northern province of Beheira, the official news agency MENA said, citing the transport ministry spokesman.
