9 best garden parasols for shade, style and sun protection

Some canopy fabrics offer UV protection, so you can lounge al fresco with peace of mind - (Eve Smallman/The Independent)

When the sun finally shines the best garden parasols are an easy way to make the most of your outdoor space without overheating. Practical yet stylish, they provide essential shade for everything from garden lounging to al fresco dining.

Parasols are one of my go-to garden additions, as they instantly create a more comfortable setup while being far easier to move and adjust than permanent structures. Whether you’ve got a compact patio or a sprawling lawn, they’re a flexible option that work in a range of spaces.

Garden parasols come in a wide variety of designs to suit different aesthetics. From sleek cantilever styles and classic market umbrellas to chic designs and neutral tones, it’s simple to find one that complements your outdoor furniture.

To find the ones truly worth investing in, I’ve reviewed a selection of parasols across different price points and styles, focusing on durability, ease of use and design. With years of experience covering homes and gardens, I can truly tell the difference between a weak sunshade and one that will last you through multiple summers.

Once you’ve picked your parasol, you might also want to upgrade the rest of your setup with the best deckchairs and best egg chairs.

Lazy Susan stone parasol

Rating: 5/5

Best: garden parasol overall

Why we love it

  • Very quick to unbox
  • High coverage
  • Easy crank
  • Wind resistant

Take note

  • Not as decorative as others

Out of all the parasols I tested for this guide, the Lazy Susan stone parasol stood out as a reliable option that I kept coming back to use. It was very quick to unbox and set up, and the wide canopy provides excellent coverage, making it ideal for keeping a larger seating area shaded throughout the day. The design is simple but effective, with sturdy ribs that feel robust and hold up well in breezier conditions.

The easy-to-use crank mechanism makes adjusting the canopy straightforward, while the medium weight strikes a good balance between stability and manoeuvrability. It’s also competitively priced, offering great value for money. The only downside is that it’s not as eye-catching as some other styles - but I like its simple, chic look.

GoodHome pescara parasol

Rating: 5/5

Best: budget garden parasol

Why we love it

  • Chic design
  • Wooden-style metal base
  • Comes with storage bag
  • Casts a strong shadow
  • Affordable

GoodHome’s pescara parasol is the best budget parasol I tested, standing out for its effortlessly chic, beachy design that brings a relaxed, holiday feel to any garden. The wooden-style metal base adds to the aesthetic while still feeling sturdy, and the canopy itself holds its shape well without creasing, even after packing away. It also comes with a handy carry bag, making storage and transport much easier than bulkier models like the Numa. It could easily be taken to the beach.

Thoughtful details elevate it further, like the handle featuring clear instructions for quick setup, and the tilting mechanism. In use, it casts a strong, reliable shadow, offering impressive shade coverage for its price point – comparable to the Lazy Susan. It’s also easy to wipe clean, making it as practical as it is fashionable.

La Redoute Olva ruffled parasol

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: stylish garden parasol

Why we love it

  • Lightweight
  • Simple to crank
  • Wipes clean

Take note

  • Doesn’t come with a base or bag
  • Ribs pop out easily

The OIva is my number one choice for a stylish parasol with pretty frilled edges and green stripes that bring a softer, decorative finish. It’s easy to handle, with a simple crank mechanism that makes adjusting the canopy quick and straightforward.

It’s also practical in places – the prongs pop out for easier cleaning, and the fabric wipes down well after use. That said, the material can crease slightly, and it does get quite warm underneath on hotter days. It also doesn’t come with a base or storage bag, which is worth factoring in.

Dunelm macrame parasol

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: boho garden parasol

Why we love it

  • Pretty macramé design
  • Easy to pair with other furniture styles
  • Robust design
  • Casts strong shade

Take note

  • Push up mechanism difficult for shorter people
  • Slightly tricky to clean

With its macramé detailing and distinctly boho feel, this Dunelm design is a breezy, beautiful parasol that works well across a range of outdoor setups. It’s versatile and easy to pair with different furniture styles, whether you’re going for a relaxed, beachy look or something more polished. The push-up mechanism is simple to use, although the height may feel slightly awkward if you’re on the shorter side (like me!).

In terms of performance, it’s impressively robust, with a large canopy that casts a strong, reliable shadow throughout the day. It feels comparable in size and quality to the B&Q and Lazy Susan, making it a dependable choice if you want both style and substance. The only downside? The macramé is a little time-consuming to clean.

Habitat tilting garden parasol

Rating: 4/5

Best: parasol for the beach

Why we love it

  • Lightweight
  • Pretty design
  • Tilts
  • Simple crank

Take note

  • Prongs fall out easily
  • Flimsy fabric

Habitat’s tilting garden parasol is a lightweight, easy-going option with a pretty beachy design, complete with macramé trim that adds a relaxed, decorative touch. It’s simple to set up thanks to the straightforward crank, and its portability makes it a good choice for taking to the beach or moving around the garden as needed.

However, the lighter build does mean it’s less durable than others I tested. The fabric feels somewhat flimsy, and I found the prongs can fall out quite easily, which affects its overall sturdiness. In terms of quality, it’s comparable to more budget-friendly options, so while it looks great, it’s better suited to occasional use rather than something more heavy-duty.

Bridgman cantilever almond parasol

Rating: 5/5

Best: cantilever

Why we love it

  • High coverage
  • Easy to manoeuvre despite the size
  • Surprisingly portable and easy to store
  • Elegant design

Take note

  • Expensive

Bridgman’s cantilever almond design is the most premium parasol on the list – and for good reason. It offers impressive coverage, easily shading a large seating or dining area, while the sturdy, high-quality materials give it a premium feel that holds up well in changing weather. Despite its size, it’s surprisingly easy to manoeuvre thanks to two well-placed handles, though it is heavy and really requires two people to move it comfortably.

The design is sleek yet simple, elevating any outdoor setup, and it’s also easy to clean after regular use. While it sits at the more expensive end of the spectrum, the size, durability and portability make it a worthwhile investment.

Online Home Shop stripe print outdoor parasol

Rating: 4/5

Best: portable garden parasol

Why we love it

  • Budget-friendly
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Pretty design

Take note

  • Material not as robust as others
  • Ribs come out easily

Online Home Shop’s parasol is one of the most budget-friendly I tested, and it’s the most portable option for taking on the go. It’s extremely lightweight and comes with its own carry bag, making it simple to transport and store. Setup is quick and fuss-free, and the pretty design – with matching cushions available – adds a cohesive, summery feel to the garden.

However, the lighter build does come with some trade-offs. The material isn’t as robust as others I tested, and I found a few ribs came loose during use, which affected overall durability. On the plus side, it wipes clean easily, making it low maintenance. It’s a great pick for convenience, but less suited to long-term, heavy-duty use.

Numa Eclipse beige parasol and stone base

Rating: 4/5

Best: luxury garden parasol

Why we love it

  • Very stylish
  • Full coverage
  • Durable design
  • Easy to clean

Take note

  • Very heavy base makes it difficult to move
  • String lever and lock are a bit tricky

The Numa’s design and durability impressed me, making it a strong contender for a more permanent garden setup. The heavy-duty build feels incredibly robust, and the wide canopy provides full, reliable coverage throughout the day. It’s also undeniably chic, adding a polished finish to any outdoor space, while remaining easy to wipe clean after use.

Assembly is a two-person job, and the very heavy base (120kg) means it’s best left in one spot rather than moved around. The pin-lock system for keeping the parasol open can also be a little tricky to operate at first. I couldn’t reach the pulling mechanism at my small height of 5ft 2in, so had to rope in my boyfriend, who is a foot taller.

Charles Bentley banana cantilever umbrella

Rating: 3.5/5

Best: budget cantilever parasol

Why we love it

  • Good value for money for its size
  • Provides plenty of shade
  • Chic design

Take note

  • Bit tricky to put up
  • Metal is a bit flimsy

Offering strong value for money, especially when it comes to size, the Charles Bentley banana cantilever delivers a generous canopy with a good amount of reliable shade for its price point. Once set up, it works well for covering seating or dining areas and is a practical choice for everyday garden use.

However, it’s not the easiest to assemble, and I found it a little fiddly compared to the Bridgman, which felt more straightforward in comparison, despite it being much bigger. The frame feels slightly flimsy in places, so it benefits from careful handling. Plus, the base needs to be properly anchored with pegs to stay secure.

Your questions about garden parasols answered

What are the best garden parasols?

For a dependable all-rounder, the Lazy Susan stone parasol is the clear winner as the best parasol, thanks to its generous coverage, elegant design, easy crank and sturdy, wind-resistant build at a reasonable price. If you’re shopping on a budget, the B&Q GoodHome Pescara parasol impresses with its chic, beachy design, strong shade and added portability. For a premium investment, the Bridgman cantilever almond parasol stands out with its expansive coverage, premium design and surprisingly easy manoeuvrability despite its size. And if style is your top priority, the La Redoute Olva ruffled parasol brings a decorative, design-led finish that instantly elevates any outdoor space.

How I tested garden parasols

Over a month of spring sunshine, I used each parasol in my garden, assessing them on the following factors:

How to clean a garden parasol

To clean a garden parasol, start by brushing off loose dirt and debris with a soft brush. Then wipe the fabric with warm water mixed with a mild detergent, using a sponge or cloth to gently remove stains like mud or bird droppings. For tougher marks, let the soapy solution sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly with clean water. Avoid harsh chemicals or pressure washers, as they can damage the fabric. Leave the parasol fully open to air dry completely before closing it to prevent mould or mildew from forming.
