A new primary school in Swansea will have the first Welsh medium day care facility in the city .
Cabinet members have agreed a £9.9 million contract for a new YGG Tan-y-lan, which will move from its current home to Beacons View Road, Clase.
The Welsh medium school will cater for 420 pupils and is expected to open in September, 2021, with a childcare area included.
Council leader Rob Stewart said: "I'm very pleased to see this administration delivering brand new 21st century facilities for Welsh medium education."
The cost of the project has risen by £1.4 million from the outline business case figure due to additional traffic measures and retaining wall work, among other factors.
The council must contribute £3.1 million to the £9.9 million cost, with the rest to come from the Welsh Government.
The new school will have an all-weather sports pitch and a multi-use games area, which the public will be able to use outside of school hours.
Cabinet member for education, Cllr Jennifer Raynor, said she was delighted to bring forward the report recommending approval of the contract.
She said the cost was broadly in the line with the tender, and that money for the new-build would be retained in a project bank account to protect suppliers from any late payments or company collapse, not that this is expected.
Cllr Raynor also said that school, college and university students in Swansea were learning firsthand about the construction industry at new-build projects at Gorseinon's Parc y Werin, where a new primary is being built, and the under-construction pupil referral unit in Cockett.
Referring to YGG Tan-y-lan, she said: "I think this is an excellent project, and the sooner we get on with it the better."
Cllr Andrea Lewis was a pupil of the school which became the current YGG Tan-y-lan, on Tan-Y-Lan Terrace, Morriston .
"It was not in the best condition even then," she said.
"It (the new school) is something that will be really beneficial to local comunities."
