9.2 million cigarettes worth €6.9 million seized at Dublin Port

9.2 million cigarettes were seized by Revenue at Dublin Port today.

The cigarettes have an estimated retail value of €6.9 million and were found as a result of routine profiling.

They would represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €5.4 million.

Detector dog Kelly and Revenue's mobile x-ray scanner helped with the successful search.

The illegal 'Kingdom' cigarettes were on their way into the country from Bulgaria.

Investigations are currently ongoing.

A Revenue spokeswoman said: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
