9/11: Twenty years on, Europe seeks a role in Afghanistan after US pullout

TALKING EUROPE © FRANCE 24

The world is currently looking back 20 years, to the devastating attacks of September 11, 2001. As the victims are commemorated, we're also asking what has come out of the two decades of Western engagement in Afghanistan, which began in the immediate aftermath of those attacks. The recent US pullout there has seen the Taliban retake control at a speed no Western government seemingly expected.

We look into the role of Europe in this story over the last 20 years and in the years to come.

"The action was co-financed by the European Union in the frame of the European Parliament's grant programme in the field of communication. The European Parliament was not involved in its preparation and is, in no case, responsible for or bound by the information or opinions expressed in the context of this action. In accordance with applicable law, the authors, interviewed people, publishers or programme broadcasters are solely responsible. The European Parliament can also not be held liable for direct or indirect damage that may result from the implementation of the action."
