The victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks were honored Thursday on the 24th anniversary of the tragedy, which killed nearly 3,000 people.
The big picture: At Ground Zero in New York City, the Pentagon and in communities across the U.S., Americans paid solemn tribute with readings of the names of those who died and moments of silence, as victims continue to be identified over two decades after planes struck the twin towers and the Pentagon building.
Driving the news: President Trump and first lady Melania Trump attended a commemoration ceremony at the Pentagon in Virginia, where the hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed and killed 184 people.
- In lower Manhattan, family members honored their loved ones by reading their names aloud.
- Observers also gathered in a Shanksville, Pennsylvania, field where Flight 93 crashed after passengers and crew took action to thwart another attack.
What they're saying: "We will build taller, grow stronger, fight harder and soar higher, and together, we will go forward as one people with one heart, one fate, one flag and one glorious destiny," Trump said at the Pentagon memorial.
