'8647' mystery: What does the numbers mean? Sign appears in Washington's iconic National Mall

Washington, D.C. has been hit by a bizarre mystery after giant numbers reading "8647" suddenly appeared across a stretch of grass on the iconic National Mall, triggering a federal investigation and igniting political controversy just days before a major event linked to President Donald Trump.

The massive message, etched into the lawn near the World War II Memorial, was visible from aerial cameras and webcams but much harder to spot from ground level. Images showed the numbers formed by patches of dead or discolored grass, leaving authorities scrambling to determine who was behind the unusual display and how it was created.

Investigators say the markings appeared sometime within the last week. Photos taken on June 5 showed no sign of the numbers, suggesting the message emerged recently.

The timing has raised eyebrows. The discovery comes just before large crowds are expected in Washington for a UFC event associated with Trump's birthday celebrations. While officials have not linked the two events, the appearance of the message has fueled intense speculation online and in political circles.

At the center of the controversy is the meaning of "8647." In American slang, "86" can mean "remove" or "get rid of." Combined with "47" — a reference to Trump as the 47th President of the United States — the phrase has been used by some critics as a symbolic anti-Trump slogan.
