83-year-old drink driver banned after she ran into a parked car

An 83-year-old drink driver ran into a parked car in her village, court heard.

It ended 55 years of unblemished motoring for Margaret Warsop, a widowed mother-of-two of High Meadow, Tollerton.

She was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £240 with £117 costs. She admitted driving with 156 mgs of alcohol in 100 millitres of blood, 76 over the legal limit.

Nottingham magistrates heard that the incident took place at 5pm on Medina Drive, Tollerton on August 18.

Anthony Cheung, prosecuting, said police were called to deal with a report

that a vehicle "went into a parked, unattended car." Nobody was hurt.

He told the court: "She failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to a police station." Warsop had never been in trouble before.

Nick Walsh, mitigating, said: "She had been driving for 55 years. She had never had an accident, never had to make an insurance claim, never had a speeding ticket or anything like that.

"As she has got older, she has been a careful responsible driver aware of the limitations.

"She made a decision to stop driving on motorways and stop driving at night for reasons of safety to other people.

"Her attitude towards vehicles and drinking is one of zero tolerance."

On the morning of the offence, she had been working on a pile of correspondence before taking a break.

"As she has become older, she has become forgetful from time to time.

"She had lunch and a glass of wine before falling to sleep.

"Later she woke and had forgotten about it. She didn't feel affected by alcohol and took the decision to drive," added Mr Walsh for Warsop, who worked at the adult education department in the Nottingham University.

If she completes a course on the perils of drink driving, the disqualification will be reduced by 25 per cent.
