Glendale school officials will hold three community meetings next month to gather community input on how Glendale Unified's new voting districts should be drawn, a move that school officials are required to take after they were sued for allegedly violating the state's voting rights act. Servicing young smiles
The majority of the 400 students who attend Providencia Elementary School in Burbank received a free dental examination Wednesday as part of Kids' Community Dental Clinic's annual outreach to offer free care to local students. Three volunteer dentists and 30 dental students worked at several stations in the cafeteria at Providencia to teach students how to brush their teeth, examine them for any decay or infections, give them a fluoride treatment and encourage them to floss. Still going strong at 103
At her retirement home in Glendale on Thursday, Lila Brooks was surrounded by photographs of her with wild raccoons and old newspaper clippings about her efforts as founder and director of California Wildlife Defenders. The longtime animal activist just celebrated birthday No. 103, but she does not consider herself old. "I want to be active. I want to still accomplish things. I don't want people to feel sorry for me. I have a terrific memory. I am articulate. I am not feeling old at all," she said. Glendale News-Press
Actress dies after cancer battle
Former television and stage actress Toni Bull Bua, who ran an acting school in Burbank for many years with her late husband, died at the age of 69 on Feb. 11 in her Glendale home following a five-year battle with breast cancer. Bua was also the president of the Here's to Life Foundation, sponsoring at-risk teens and others through art and entertainment. In addition, she and her husband ran the Bua Acting for Life school in Burbank, training hundreds of students for more than 40 years. Burbank Leader

Burbank misses water use goal
Shortly after state officials moved earlier this month to extend an emergency water-conservation regulation that required Californians to cut their water use, the latest data shows that Burbank had failed, for the first time since June, to meet its monthly target for water savings. Gauging greenhouse gas in La Ca
How much greenhouse gas do La Cans create in the course of their daily activities, and where might reductions be made? City officials are drafting a climate action plan to answer those questions and are asking for residents' help. Between now and May, city staff will be working, thanks to a $70,998 grant offered through the Southern California Assn. of Governments, to inventory the city's collective greenhouse gas emissions in order to develop a suite of measures and regulations to reduce citywide pollution rates. Bus company plan approved by Historic Preservation Commission
The historic Larry Zarian Transportation Center could be getting a new neighbor: an administration building for the Glendale Beeline bus system and storage space for its 37-vehicle fleet. Initial plans for a two-story, 10,000-square-foot office structure and a maintenance facility about 40 feet from the train depot won approval Thursday from the Historic Preservation Commission. Water savings rates lag behind state mandate
Customers served by Foothill Municipal Water District used 21% less water in January of this year than they did in January 2013, the benchmark used by the state for measuring reductions, according to a district release issued Tuesday. Man arrested in wife's stabbing
A man was arrested Thursday afternoon on suspicion of stabbing his estranged wife in the face in North Hollywood and later crashing into three parked cars in Burbank, according to police. The man reportedly fled in his car, while she drove herself to Saint Joseph Medical Center, where she was reported in stable condition. Burbank Leader
Commercial burglaries reported in La Ca
Three Foothill Boulevard restaurants -- DISH restaurant, Taylor's Steakhouse and Garden Grill -- were burglarized by a pair of suspects early Wednesday morning, adding to a growing number of commercial break-ins sheriff's officials believe are likely crimes of opportunity. La Ca Valley Sun
