Nonresident tuition going up at GCC
Students who attend Glendale Community College who are from outside the state or out of the country will pay more than $200 per unit next school year after the college's trustees unanimously agreed to increase the price of nonresident tuition Tuesday night. For foreign students or those enrolling in the college from out of state, nonresident tuition will cost $205 per unit, up from the $195 per-unit amount those students currently pay. Glendale charter school appeal denied
The Los Angeles County Board of Education struck down an appeal Tuesday filed by parents looking to establish a charter school in Glendale who had previously been denied in their efforts by the Glendale Unified School Board. Glendale News-Press
In agreement
After a long negotiating period, officials at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy have reached an agreement with the neighborhood group calling itself "Protect LCF" over the terms of future expansion plans at the La Ca campus. School officials worked with the group, creating a list of conditions pertaining to traffic, parking, alcohol service on campus and the number of special events, according to an FSHA release issued Tuesday night. Recovering heart patients crowned
Five people who bounced back from heart maladies and served as an example for others during their recoveries were honored at Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital on Thursday. Now in its 21st year, the annual "Kings and Queens of Hearts" event once again recognized patients who not only got healthy again, but stayed in good condition with the help of the hospital's cardiac fitness center. The rich history of the trails system throughout the greater La Ca area will be examined in an exhibit opening Sunday afternoon at Lanterman House museum. Bullet train may have new starting point
The California High Speed Rail Authority's initial operating segment had been expected to end in Burbank before eventually reaching Anaheim, but officials said in a telephone conference Thursday that a new draft business plan, which the authority is required to produce every two years, proposes to start with a Bakersfield to San Jose segment instead. The construction arm of a development company that bilked Glendale's Housing Authority out of millions was one of the largest contributors to City Clerk Ardy Kassakhian's campaign in 2008. Pedestrian struck and killed
A 56-year-old Glendale pedestrian died Thursday morning after getting struck by a car while jaywalking in Glendale the night before, marking the city's first pedestrian fatality of the year, officials said. Glendale News-Press
Arrest made after bike theft
Police on Wednesday arrested a probationer caught on camera last month stealing a customized bike belonging to a 13-year-old boy with cerebral palsy. Forensic evidence lifted from the bike -- which was recovered on Jan. 28, five days after it was reported stolen -- led investigators to Carlos Andres Lopez, a 47-year-old Los Angeles man who's been convicted of selling drugs, possessing a gun, burglary and other crimes, according to Burbank Police Sgt.
