Bike theft caught on camera
Police are looking for a man suspected of stealing the bike of a 13-year-old boy with special needs from a Burbank apartment complex garage, police said. The man was reportedly caught on security footage stealing the bike, valued at $5,300, from a garage on the 4500 block of Clybourn Avenue. Burbank Leader
Don't call it a trend
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials are calling a spate of break-ins and one attempt that occurred at three businesses and three homes within a 24-hour period last week "random" and not part of an upward burglary trend in La Ca. The incidents are thought to have taken place on or around Jan. 19, the same day Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station Capt. GUSD puts superintendent offer on the table
The Glendale school board announced Wednesday morning that they unanimously agreed to extend an offer to Winfred Roberson, Jr., to take the helm of Glendale Unified. Roberson is the current superintendent of the Davis Joint Unified School District. Glendale News-Press

Treat the trees right
The Glendale City Council is looking into strengthening protections for local oak trees by preventing them from being harmed by overwatering or damaged by nearby plants. Dan Hardgrove, deputy director of public works, said the intent of the amendments is to prevent overwatering and to be mindful of planning or maintaining live plants within the protected tree zone. Local nonprofits get a big boost
A dozen San Fernando Valley area nonprofits that serve the homeless, disabled and school children in low-income areas were recently awarded $400,000 in grants from Providence Health Services, the Catholic nonprofit that operates Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center and Providence High School in Burbank. Longtime community activist remembered
James Donald Woodburn Sr., who worked for the city of Burbank for more than 30 years and was involved in the community, died Jan. 5 at his home in Burbank. He was 90 years old. Woodburn spent 34 years with the city of Burbank, where he worked in many engineering and management roles within the Public Service Department, including chief engineer from 1951-85. Burbank Leader

A longtime La Ca business had a brush with local fame last week, when KTLA-5 Morning News co-anchor Chris Burrous came by to take a bite out of one of Berge's Sandwiches. The morning newsman -- long known for turning up at local hot spots requested by viewers in the segment "Burrous' Bites" -- was turned on to the location by faithful customer and former employee Jennifer Merkel.
