800-mile-wide storm to bring strong winds and arctic temperatures to Edinburgh from tomorrow until Saturday

A giant storm front is going to bring some seriously miserable weather to Edinburgh and the Lothians in the second half of this week.

Temperatures will drop to just 5°C on Wednesday 8 May as the 800-mile-wide storm arrives in the UK, with overnight temperatures just above freezing, meaning you could be back to having to scrape your car in the mornings.

There will be high winds on Wednesday with gusts of 40mph, and although winds won't stay as high, temperatures won't increase either until the storm front has passed.

The unseasonable freeze will start to ease on Monday 13 May, with temperatures in the capital climbing back into the 16°C range.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said:

“The coldest air coming to Britain is from north of Russia, converging with cold air from well north of the Arctic Circle, not too far from the Pole, and flooding to the UK and a good part of Europe as far south as Italy.

“Unseasonable snow in the second week of May is expected on Scottish mountains, with disappointing temperatures.

“This is not at all like how early May should feel – and blowy conditions are ahead. Low pressure will be slap bang across the UK.”
