80-year-old charity champ does it again with £4000 donation

West Lothian Fundraising hero John Thompson is showing no sign of slowing down at 80 years old after he embarked on yet another challenge.

John stepped-out out again to add to his phenomenal fund-raising quest by completing a 15-mile walk in aid of two West Lothian charities.

Over the years John has completed swimming challenges and even abseiled from the Forth Rail Bridge to raise money for charity.

John raised cash this time around for Pathways and Eliburn Support Services Centres for Special Needs Adults from the age of 16 to 65 year olds - handing each good cause a phenomenal £2135 each.

Accompanying army veteran John on his walk in January was his friend Derek Burns and the pair later presented cheques to the manager of Eliburn centre Carol Brown and the manager of Pathways centre, Alex Costigan.

Manager of overall services, Lorraine Bolton, gave them a tour of the premises and they were shown the kind of equipment the funds would be spent on and we had a lovely day there with tea and cakes.

John has been raising funds for Local and national charities for the last 50 years and in the last four years he has raised just over £40,000.

The ex-army piper is formerly of the 1st Bn Royal Highland Fusiliers and has been a tenant at Bield Retirement Housing at Craigengar Park in Craigshill, where John and Irene have resided there for the past 11 years.

John said: “I love to do charity work for ASN schools, the elderly and dementia sufferiers, pensioners and veterans charities such as Legion Scotland, Poppyscotland, and Erskin Care homes,

“I enjoy doing things for charities because it makes a big difference in their lives.”
