80-year-old Castle Douglas golfer wins Southerness tournament

A Castle Douglas golfer has seen off all-comers to win a tournament at the age of 80.

And Zena Livingstone’s success in the Criffel Cup came exactly 50 years after she previously claimed the trophy.

Her nett score of 66 was enough for her to win the competition at Southerness Golf Club on Thursday.

Zena, who lives in Threave Terrace, said: “I knew I’d had a good score but there were a few people out on the course. A couple of the girls sent messages later on saying well done but it wasn’t until the secretary called that I knew.

“It’s an open competition and I won it exactly 50 years ago in 1971. I was a member of Southerness until the start of the year but it’s just Castle Douglas now.

“I still try to play two or three times a week but sometimes other things get in the way.

“With the new system my handicap has gone up to 22.5 – it was around 18 or 19 and it has been lower.”
