Sunday marked one month since the lifting of the government's state of emergency in 39 of Japan's 47 prefectures.
In the period between May 13 to June 12, 1,241 people were confirmed to be infected with new coronavirus across the country, 282 of whom were within these 39 prefectures.
In 22 prefectures, including Ibaraki, Fukui and Okinawa, there have been no new confirmed cases recorded, but in Fukuoka Prefecture, there were 166, partially due to the fact that many of them were found in Kitakyushu City.
Of the national total, 959 -- about 80% -- of the infections were found in eight prefectures: Hokkaido, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Kyoto, Osaka and Hyogo, where the state of emergency began being gradually lifted on May 21. Tokyo, Kanagawa and Hokkaido have seen newly confirmed cases almost every day, with 440 discovered in Tokyo, 209 in Kanagawa, and 175 in Hokkaido within the span of a month as of last Friday.
Meanwhile, the restriction of travel between prefectures is to be relaxed on June 19, and local governments are calling for thorough preventative measures against the virus.
