80% of Irish people eager to book holiday after restrictions are lifted, poll finds

A poll has found 80% of Irish people are eager to book a holiday once restrictions here are lifted.

At the moment, the Department of Foreign Affairs continues to advise against non-essential travel.

The biggest cause for concern for travellers was the requirement to quarantine for 14 days upon their return to Ireland.

A total of 35% of those surveyed by insurance firm Allianz Partners cited the self-isolation rule as a major barrier to booking a holiday.

And 27% of those surveyed were also worried about social distancing on aeroplanes and ferries.

On Friday, the Government announced much of the country will reopen for business on June 29.

This means that hotels and restaurants throughout Ireland will be welcoming in guests.

With that in mind, 43% of hopeful holidaymakers want to take a post-lockdown break within Ireland, according to the survey.

However, 37% would prefer to holiday abroad - and other countries are already welcoming Irish people in. Spain began welcoming in international visitors yesterday while Italy, Portugal, Greece have already opened their borders.

Allianz Partners spokesman Roland Hesse said: “Although non-essential travel is suspended for most of us, the desire for a trip away from home has escalated.

“With the travel restrictions set to be removed within Ireland from the end of the month, restrictions in other countries being lifted from the June 15, Ryanair actively promoting flights to Europe from July 1 and the 14-day quarantine requirements still in place we believe consumer confidencel will be restored over the summer. months”

“The future of travel may look uncertain, but what is certain is that how we travel to destinations, particularly by air, will change once restrictions are lifted.

“The good news is that experts predict the changes will, in the long term, not only make travel safer but also a more enjoyable, stress-free experience.”
