MADURAI: Director General of Police (DGP) C Sylendra Babu on Saturday said that only 12 cases out of around 80 custodial deaths reported across Tamil Nadu in the past 10 years led to convictions, while others were incidents of suicide or illnesses.
The DGP was addressing a day-long symposium on 'Prevention of custodial deaths' organised for police officers at Thiagarajar College in Madurai. "Most of the custodial deaths are preventable. Cops must pay attention to the medical history and mental state of the persons in custody. They should only go by evidence and have a good sense of judgement without acting on emotions. Nowadays, we have technology such as CCTV camera footage which helps us find culprits," he said. Asra Garg, inspector general of police, south zone, Madurai city commissioner of police T Senthilkumar and Virudhunagar superintendent of police M Manoharan were present.
