
Fishermen gather for warmth around a drum fire at the water's edge as dawn breaks over Miyako Port in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, on Wednesday. Behind them towers a 10.4-meter-high coastal levee built in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The tsunami that followed the quake swept away the fishermen's oceanside storage huts, forcing them to carry their poles and other equipment from home each day. "The huts are gone, so now we gather outside to watch the waves and listen to the sounds of the ocean before deciding when to set out," said one of the fishermen.
