8-year-old Michigan girl shot in the head by sibling, police say

DETROIT — An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head Sunday night by her 20-year-old sibling in Southfield, police say.

The girl underwent surgery and is in critical condition, according to the Southfield Police Department.

Southfield police detained the 20-year-old sibling and are presenting the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, which will decide Monday whether to press charges. He or she isn't being named yet because prosecutors haven't filed charges.

The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. Sunday at the Twelve North Apartments on 12 Mile Road.

Southfield Deputy Chief Jeffrey Jagielski wouldn't comment on whether police believe the shooting was intentional or what type of weapon was used until the case is presented to prosecutors.

He said an investigation and interviews led police to take the 20-year-old sibling into custody.
