8 vendors held for offering namaz in public in Haridwar

HARIDWAR: Eight street vendors were arrested by Haridwar police on Thursday for offering namaz at a weekly market in Haridwar's Shivalik Nagar.

According to local police, the arrest was made after a few area residents submitted a complaint in the matter on Wednesday.

A case has been lodged against the vendors under section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Under this section, a police officer can arrest any person without a warrant in case the cop feels that the accused may disturb public peace.

Speaking on the development, Amarchand Sharma, station house officer of Ranipur police station, told TOI, “The weekly market in Shivalik Nagar is held every Wednesday. This time, eight Jwalapur residents offered namaz in the market. They were arrested after a police complaint in the matter. They were released later in the day.”
