8 South Side high school students sent to hospitals after eating 'infused' brownies, candy

CHICAGO _ Students at two high schools on the South Side were taken to hospitals on Wednesday after eating brownies and candy "infused with an unknown substance," according to fire and police officials.

Paramedics responded about 11:10 a.m. to a call about three students at Epic Academy College Prep in the South Chicago neighborhood who "were ill" after eating brownies, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said. The students were taken to South Shore Hospital.

About 12:15 p.m., paramedics responded to a call about five students "who were ill after eating what appears to be gummies," at Fenger Academy High School, in the Roseland neighborhood, Merritt said. The candy was "infused with an unknown substance," Chicago police officer Jessica Alvarez said.

The students from Fenger, three of them female and two male, were taken to Roseland Community Hospital, Merritt said.

Alvarez said authorities don't know where the students obtained the candy, and Chicago police detectives were investigating.

None of the students were in critical condition, Merritt said.
