July 29--Eight children were hospitalized Tuesday evening after a tree fell in a popular public park in Pasadena's Arroyo Seco, authorities said.
Three of the children were in critical condition and another five had minor injuries, said Lisa Derderian, a spokeswoman for the Pasadena Fire Department.
At least some of the children had attended a day camp at the Kidspace Children's Museum, which is located in the Arroyo Seco. Campers were awaiting pickup from their parents when the tree, located in adjacent Brookside Park, fell over, said Tim Scheidler, a marketing manager for the museum.
Firefighters were called to the site in the 400 block of North Arroyo Boulevard shortly before 5 p.m., Derderian said.
The Kidspace Children's Museum day camp has 33 children enrolled in the current session, Scheidler said. All campers have been accounted for, and museum officials did not specify how many of those injured are campers. No staff members were hospitalized, he said.
It's unclear what type of tree fell over or what caused the tree to fall. The 62-acre Brookside Park is run by the city of Pasadena and is located next to the Rose Bowl.
