We think we understand our feline friends. After all, they live in our houses and sleep on our beds. Yet, myths about cats persist. Even experienced owners get things wrong.
Unfortunately, these misconceptions can actually harm your pet. Often, we misread their signals. Then, we feed them the wrong things. Therefore, it is time to set the record straight. We will debunk eight common myths to help you be a better cat parent. Your cat will thank you for it.
Milk is Good for Cats
Cartoons lied to you. In reality, most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Consequently, a saucer of milk causes stomach upset. It leads to diarrhea and discomfort.
Instead, stick to fresh water. Cats don’t need dairy nutrients. However, if you want to treat them, buy cat-specific milk. Save the cow’s milk for your cereal. Please, don’t make your cat sick with a “treat.”
A Purring Cat is Always Happy
Purring is a communication tool. Yes, it often means contentment. However, cats also purr when they are in pain. Sometimes, it can be a self-soothing mechanism.
Therefore, look at the whole body language. Are their ears back? Is the tail twitching? Context matters immensely. Don’t assume a purr means everything is fine. Actually, it could be a cry for help.
Cats Are Low Maintenance
People get cats because they seem easy. While they don’t need walks like dogs, they do need emotional connection. In fact, ignoring a cat leads to behavioral issues.
So, play with them daily. Also, clean the litter box religiously. They need stimulation and love. Furthermore, neglect leads to depression and anxiety. Remember, they are not furniture; they are family.
Indoor Cats Don’t Need Vets
You might think they are safe inside. Perhaps you believe viruses and parasites can’t reach them. That is false. Illnesses develop regardless of location.
For example, kidney disease and dental issues are common. Yearly checkups catch these silent killers early. Also, vaccines are still necessary. Ultimately, prevention is cheaper than treatment. Don’t wait for an emergency.
They Always Land on Their Feet
Cats are agile, but not magic. Physically, they need time to right themselves in the air. Falls from short distances can be dangerous. Worse, high falls cause shattered bones.
Therefore, secure your windows. Don’t let them play on unsafe balconies. The “righting reflex” has limits. Gravity can still hurt them. So, protect them from high places.
Pregnant Women Must Avoid Cats
The fear is Toxoplasmosis. This parasite is found in cat feces. However, you are more likely to get it from gardening or raw meat. You don’t need to rehome your pet.
Instead, have someone else change the litter. Wear gloves if you must do it. Also, keep the cat indoors. Basic hygiene protects you and the baby. Don’t lose your friend over fear.
Declawing is Just a Nail Trim
This is a dangerous lie. Actually, declawing is an amputation. It removes the last bone of each toe. Sadly, it causes lifelong pain and behavioral changes.
Use scratching posts instead. Also, trim their nails regularly. Intense scratching is natural behavior. Never choose surgery for the sake of furniture. It is cruel and unnecessary.
Cats Are Antisocial Loners
Dogs get the credit for loyalty. Conversely, cats are seen as aloof. In reality, cats form deep bonds. They just show affection differently.
For instance, they follow you from room to room. Then, they blink slowly at you. Often, they sleep near you. Respect their boundaries, and they will love you deeply. Truly, they are quiet companions.
Understanding the Feline Mind
Cats are complex creatures. Therefore, they deserve owners who understand their real needs. Dispelling these myths improves their quality of life. Also, it deepens your bond with them.
Look past the stereotypes. Instead, pay attention to what your cat is actually telling you. Knowledge is the best treat you can give them. Be the owner they deserve.
