NEW YORK _ Eight people were arrested Friday night for damaging store windows and scrawling graffiti across several Manhattan buildings during protests over the death of an upstate Black man in police custody.
Cops recovered two Tasers and a cache of smoke bombs from the nabbed protesters, who were seeing smashing store windows near E. 24th St. and Madison Ave., and E. 22nd St. and Fifth Ave. around 8:15 p.m.
One protester caught breaking windows, identified by police as 30-year-old Jade O'Halloran, had two Tasers on her, cops said.
Her friends were also cuffed when they hurled smoke bombs at cops taking O'Halloran into custody, authorities said.
In all, five women and three men _ including a Portland resident _ were charged with criminal mischief and making graffiti. All were given desk appearance tickets and will answer the charges in court later this year, authorities said.
A Starbucks, several banks and a Duane Reade were among the shattered and defaced stores, with an estimated $100,000 in damage, ABC 7 reported.
The arrests came as hundreds of demonstrators marched across Manhattan over the death of Daniel Prude, who suffocated in Rochester police custody in March.
